The Gang Master…
You may call him Dr. Doolittle or the Horse Whisperer but I call him my nephew. On our way back from a great time at my cousin Joel’s wedding, Carol and myself hitched a ride north with my sister Kerri and her family. As we had a few days to get back after the Friday night wedding, we decided to take it a bit easy and head up the west coast along Hwy 101. We were driven to sickness along the curviness of SR 299. Enjoyed the immensity of the Redwood Trees in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Where captivated by a mother seal protecting a 1 hour old pup from the rising tide and other aggregations. And relaxed in a whirlpool as we watched the weirdness of two certain young men in our family. But what took the cake in all of our adventures was my nephew Eric’s discovered talent for the call of the wild.
Soon after we started north up Hwy 101 we came across an elk game reserve where we pulled off to see what we could see. Off in the distance there was a small gang of elk bedded down with a few male a bit closer. After straining to see much of nothing Eric abruptly jumped out of the car explaining “I know what to do!” He quickly ran out and grabbed a reed of grass and cupped it in his hands to make a whistle of sorts… This I have done many times before but never to the measure of success that Eric found that day. Tim, Nathan and myself all attempted to join in the chorus but Eric must have found the correct trill for as he blew, elk ears perked up and they started to stir. At first a few stood up but soon they were all on their feet and headed our way. Kerri keep yelling out of the truck “There coming keep doing that Eric!” And boy where they coming! There were even moments of tension when we were concerned for Eric safety at the success of his callings. But we all enjoyed the time and the prized moment of Eric the? gang master!
